Female Grad Student is Lead Author of Paper in Science

March 31, 2008

I’m going to brag a bit, but hopefully also send a message of encouragement to women in the sciences (and grad students in particular). A female grad student here at the University of Hawaii, Mikki Osterloo, was the lead author of a paper that appeared in the 21 March 2008 issue of Science on the discovery of possible chloride salts on Mars. The link is here, although a subscription is required to access the full article. I’m sure Mikki would respond to reprint requests, too!

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Mikki’s achievement.

Congrats, Mikki! It’s great that you have your first Science paper under your belt already! Whoo-hoo!

While it takes a great team to make discoveries and publish them, I’d be interested in seeing more of this type of post — celebrating first-authorship and new discoveries by women in our field. Who else has major first-author papers this month?
