Childcare at LPSC (and other conferences)

March 13, 2009

Guest post from Gretchen:

I know that AGU offers in house child-care at the conference venue, but LPSC doesn’t (yet?). I am bringing my kids to LPSC this year and am wondering what other people who are bringing their kids are doing regarding childcare. I have heard that in the past some women found local drop-in childcare and/or arranged for a babysitter when they arrived in Houston.

I just wanted to hear what other people are doing and if this is a concern worth discussing at the breakfast meeting.

Editor’s note: the LPSC organizers have included notes on child care in this year’s FAQ. I hope this helps!

Sorry … my personal opinion is that there is too much liability involved for there to be an easy solution to this.

As both my husband and I had to attend the same workshop last year, we hired a hotel sitter to take care of our son. This was quite expensive as we paid $600 for 4.5 days of workshop. The service was ok but not great: my son spent entire days in front of the TV and his diaper was changed about once during the day!! Still, this was a better option than nothing. These sitters can watch three or four kids for about the same rate per hour: too expensive for one kid, but affordable if you share the bill with colleagues who also want to bring their kids. The sitter was recommended by the hotel where the workshop was taking place.

I know that LPSC offers a service to search for a roommate to share the cost of a hotel room. We could ask them to set up a service to share a sitter. Or this could be organized through the WIPS network. Susan, what do you think?
