LPSC – Results

March 29, 2009

Over 120 women joined us for the 2nd annual Women’s Networking Breakfast at LPSC this year. We had a great time getting to know each other and tackling the hot issues. Several posts will be forthcoming with details, but right now I’d like to give YOU the opportunity to join the discussion, here or over one (or more) of the new email lists.

The main email list is generally used for announcements, but any member can post. Seven working groups were formed this week; the names of the groups are listed below. All attendees at the breakfast have been sent an invitation to join the main list and the group that they joined for discussion (just click the link in the email) — but anyone in the field is welcome to join the lists.  Just choose a group below, and click to join!

Check back next week for more details on where the group is heading — we welcome posts from any or all participants; send your notes in and we’ll post them here.

Tempest — try “WPS – Having it all.” And have fun!

I’m interested in discussing work/life balance issues, such as balancing having kids and parenting with being a planetary scientist, flexible work schedules and arrangements, etc. This isn’t so much daycare, and doesn’t really fit in with health issues either (though I think the topics were combined at the breakfast?)… suggestions?

Yes, thanks for the nudge. The groups are forming now, and gathering together a bit about their focus from here on out. I’ll post more as that comes in. In short, though, I certainly can clarify.

WPS is a general announcement list.
    # WPS – Mentoring is a list to discuss mentoring needs and resources.
    # WPS – Success Strategies came out of a group that was looking at things like professional image.
    # WPS – The Hiring Gap is looking at navigating the gap between graduate school and a professional (permanent?) position.
    # WPS at Teaching Colleges is a place for those at teaching colleges to meet each other.
    # WPS – Handling it all is an attempt to share ways to advance women in the field — without burning each other out.
    # WPS – Daycare is a focused group interested in child care issues at conferences.
    # WPS – Health Issues is a place for those with temporary or permanent health issues or disabilities to swap strategies and speak up for what they need
    # WPS – Forming an Organization is a group of postdocs and senior researchers interested in creating a professional organization that could tackle some of these issues as well as the general advancement of women in planetary science.

If any of these topics (or several of them) sound interesting to you, please do join by clicking the lists above or in the sidebar to the right. Those who were at the breakfast meeting have been sent invitations; anyone else in the field may certainly join the lists as well.

These lists are fluid, archived for use of members only, and not open to the general public.

Susan, can you give us a brief description (in a few words) of what each of these groups should be focused on? Some are self-explanatory, but some could use a little elaboration for those who weren’t at the breakfast (or for those who were but don’t quite remember all the details, like me!). Thanks!
