ADVANCE workshops

August 19, 2009

I am *so* sorry I didn’t post this until now and I see I have done it too late for you to submit an application. But I am still posting it to make everyone aware of this and similar opportunities. ADVANCE is an NSF program to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce.

Institutional ADVANCE awardees frequently hold workshops like this one, where attendees learn from successful women and practice with their peers. I was fortunate to attend a similar workshop at Galludet the summer before I changed jobs, and even though the workshop was aimed at academia, I used my fresh new negotiating skills to great advantage in my new situation. I couldn’t recommend this program more highly.

Even though the deadline has passed, if you’re interested you might contact Ms. Rinehart and she might be able to either take a late application or direct you to a similar program.

Rice NSF ADVANCE Program – Negotiating the Ideal Faculty Position
Workshop 2009 Invitation
Application deadline Aug 13, workshop Oct 18-19

A recent study of diversity in engineering notes that “the most accurate predictor of subsequent success for female undergraduates is the percentage of women among faculty members at their college [1].” At Rice University we are strongly committed to increasing the diversity of science and engineering faculty and students. As part of this goal we are sponsoring an exciting workshop for senior women graduate students and post-docs who are interested in pursuing an academic career. The workshop, Negotiating the Ideal Faculty Position, (October 18-19, 2009), is designed to provide participants hands-on experience to enhance their knowledge of and ability to find the right faculty position. Through support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award, all travel, meals, and lodging costs will be provided for workshop participants. Applications are due August 13. The online application can be found at
