Countdown to LPSC: Women’s Networking Breakfast

February 19, 2010

The scientists behind this blog are pleased to announce the third annual Women’s Networking Breakfast at this year’s Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.  The breakfast program will begin at 7:30 Tuesday morning in Montgomery Ballroom C at the conference hotel.  All women and those who are invested in women’s success are welcome to attend.  The breakfast will feature a short welcome, a time for all attendees to  make community announcements (bring your job prospects and your questions), and focused tabletop discussions about the most pressing issues in the field, as identified by you.

To aid us in planning, if you have a topic you’d like to discuss, please leave a comment here on the blog or send it to us for integration with the other topics — you won’t be identified or asked to speak about the topic.  Ideas may include job transitions, working on planetary science missions, becoming a co-investigator or participating scientist, work-life balance, soft money – the perks and pitfalls, flexible work, promotions, starting a seminar series at your institution, being a researcher at a teaching college … the list is up to you.  What do you want to discuss?

RSVPs are encouraged but not required via email.

Sadly, I won’t be at the meeting so can’t make the breakfast, but one topic I’m very interested in hearing more responses to is “childcare at meetings/conferences”. I posted a message about this a while ago and got a few responses. I really need to know what the community want in order to figure out how to proceed with trying to arrange childcare at the Meteoritical Society Meeting in London.

In order to do this I would like as much information as possible about

    1. who would be interested in childcare?
    2. what would people be most comfortable with? (i.e. professional care or informal babysitting setup)
    3. what kind of cost would be reasonable?
    4. any other possible ideas to help this move forward. I am helping the organisers of the New York MetSoc meeting (25-30 July 2010).

I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend, but perhaps, I can be there virtually through Skype or iChat.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    Gretchen
