Lynn Margulis

Dr. Lynn Margulis, a luminary in the science of the origins and evolution of life, including astrobilogy, died yesterday. Though I’m not a biologist, I’ve always admired Dr. Margulis. She led her life on her own terms, balancing work, family, and life as she saw fit, not as society dictated. I love this article about her – it brings up so many issues she had to work through as a pioneering woman in science. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for posting! Dr. Margulis visited Brown University to work with Dr. Jessica Whiteside while I was an undergrad and gave an amazing guest lecture in Jessica’s Fossil Record course. Her enthusiasm during the talk – and her requirement that we all participate in the discussion – was so inspiring. To listen to someone so obviously passionate about what she researched was fantastic, and only strengthened my desire to continue to follow my scientific interests in planetary geology.
