Fake it Until You Become It

In this TED Talk titled “Your body language shapes who you are” Dr. Amy Cudtty discusses research on how our body postures can affect our hormones, and thus our confidence or stress levels.  This talk also addresses some aspects of imposter syndrome (although I don’t think she calls it by that name) and ways of overcoming them.  It is 20 minutes long, but well worth it.

I am often discussing with others about various aspects of how imposter syndrome or lack of confidence may affect women in science. It is nice to see some strategies for making positive changes in ones confidence.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays to All!

I have had some interesting discussions with people about this talk since I put up this post. Perhaps “fake it” is not the best slogan because it sounds insincere. Dr. Cuddy does address this in her talk, but perhaps it doesn’t completely come across that what you are really fighting is feeling insecure when you shouldn’t.

She isn’t advocating faking your qualifications or your skills, you are trying to show your true qualifications and skills by overcoming your own inaccurate/downgrading opinions about your abilities.
